They were socially aware and self-aware - consistently tackling controversial themes that are still relevant today.
Weasie fearlessly represented the evolving role of the black woman in the family structure and George represented self-made entrepreneurship by a black male almost never seen on screen.
These television characters reinforced the plight of the black family and their presence is still necessary in this era.
This piece is designed to celebrate a ground breaking show and serve as a reminder. A reminder that we ALL need to adopt a mindset that encourages men and women of color WORKING TOGETHER. This approach will keep us as a community MOVING ON UP.
